Death & Graves

Your stuff waits three hours in an unlocked grave, and you cannot run from a fight.

Dying here doesn't spray your inventory across the floor for a despawn timer to eat up for dinner. It puts everything in a grave where you fell.

That's more forgiving than vanilla in one way and less forgiving in another, so read the second half of this page before you get comfortable :P

What the grave holds

A grave looks like a head on the ground with a hologram over it, showing whose it is, how many items and levels are inside, how long it has left, and what killed you.

It keeps your whole inventory and 80% of your experience. There's a book in there too, an obituary, signed by whatever killed you.

If the plugin can't find anywhere valid to put a grave, you keep your inventory instead. Better pray that happens to you.

Finding it again

You respawn holding a glowing recovery compass pointing at your grave. It works for five minutes after the grave is made, which is usually plenty and occasionally isn't.

/back also takes you to where you died, which is the more reliable option if you took a while getting back, but it also takes 100 Crowns.

Three hours, then it's gone

A grave lasts three hours. When the timer runs out, everything in it is destroyed. It doesn't drop on the ground, it doesn't come back to you, it just stops existing.

Three hours is long enough to finish what you were doing, get your gear together and walk back. It is not long enough to log off for the evening and deal with it tomorrow.

You can have up to 18 graves at once.

Anyone can open it

This is the part people get wrong.

Graves aren't locked. There's no protection timer, no owner-only window, no "only your killer can loot it" grace period. Whoever gets there first takes what's in it, and that includes the person who killed you.

There's one small consolation: if somebody else loots your grave, a zombie wearing your face crawls out of it and goes for them. It won't win the fight, and it doesn't drop anything, but you can consider it a formal complaint.

(Looting your own grave doesn't do that, unless you're looting your doppelganger.)

Combat tagging

The moment you trade hits with another player you're in combat for 20 seconds, counting down on your action bar. Every hit resets it.

While the timer is running:

  • You can't teleport. /home, /spawn, /back, /rtp, /warp and /tpa are all blocked.
  • You can't use an elytra, and Mending stops repairing your gear.
  • Trying one of those anyway costs you a chunk of health rather than just failing quietly.

Logging out while tagged kills you. You drop a grave exactly where you stood, and because graves aren't locked, whoever you were fighting is standing next to it. Quitting mid-fight is strictly worse than losing the fight.

The timer clears the moment you kill whoever you were fighting.
