Halloween

The Whispering

Haunted zones where the ghosts listen, and the Whisperer comes for whoever makes too much noise.

The Whispering is a Halloween event in a few haunted places around the world. Most of the time they're quiet. Every so often one of them wakes up, and then the ghosts are listening.

It runs until 2 November.

Finding a zone#

When a zone wakes up, everyone gets a message in chat with its name and coordinates, and it's posted in the Discord too. Zones wake up on their own at night, every 30 to 60 minutes, and stay active for 15 minutes.

/whispering lists every haunted zone, how far it is from you and in which direction, and which ones are active right now.

Joining in#

You don't type anything. Walk towards an active zone and you'll get a "You hear whispers" warning on your screen as you get close. Keep walking and you're in.

Once you're inside, the sky goes dark and it starts raining for you, a boss bar shows up, and you'll hear the ghosts whispering around you. Walk back out and it all goes back to normal.

People in creative or spectator are ignored.

Noise#

The ghosts hear everything you do, and the boss bar shows how close they are to telling the Whisperer.

What they hear:

  • Voice chat, if you talk at a normal volume or louder. Simple Voice Chat's whisper mode doesn't count, so use it.
  • Moving. Walking is a little noise, sprinting a lot more, and every jump adds some. Walking for more than about 6 seconds without stopping or sneaking makes every step count double.
  • Doing things. Eating, drinking, placing and breaking blocks, opening doors and chests, and shooting all make noise.
  • Mobs. Their noises count too, just less.

Sneaking makes no footstep noise at all. It's the single best thing you can do.

When something you do is loud enough to be heard, a sculk click comes back at you from where it happened. If you hear that, they heard you.

Lost Souls#

Glowing spirits drift around inside the zone. They don't attack and they're easy to kill, and each one drops 1 or 2 ectoplasm, which you need for the broom and Ghost Bonbons (Halloween Items).

Hitting things is loud, though. Every kill fills the bar a bit, so think about whether that soul is worth it.

The Whisperer#

When the bar fills, the ghosts snitch. You'll hear them, then the Whisperer's spawn sound from the spot where it's rising. Souls and smoke gather there, and a few seconds later it appears. All you'll see of it is floating black armour and a skull.

It hunts by sound, like the warden. It goes to the last loud noise it heard and only notices quieter ones up close. If it gets there and hears nothing, it sniffs around for a few seconds and then wanders off. It only goes for someone who made noise in the last few seconds or walked straight into it, so standing still and quiet keeps you safe, even right next to it.

Before every hit it winds up for half a second, with a sound and soul particles over its head. Step back and you avoid it. It can't break blocks, but walls only slow it down: if it's stuck for a few seconds it slips through.

A hunt ends when it hasn't heard anyone for about 25 seconds. Then it rests for a bit before the ghosts can call it again.

Getting caught#

If a hit would kill you, it doesn't. You're thrown out of the zone instead, with all your stuff. You can walk straight back in.

Killing it#

Everyone who hurt it gets 4 to 6 ectoplasm, and the first time you help kill it you get the Whisperer's Echo as well (Halloween Items). The kill is announced to the whole server, and the zone goes quiet again.

Tips#

  • Sneak everywhere. Seriously.
  • Switch your voice chat to whisper mode before you walk in, or just stop talking.
  • Kill Lost Souls when the bar is low, not when it's nearly full.
  • Bring friends for the fight. It gets more health for every extra player, so bring people who'll actually swing.
  • If it's coming and you can't fight, stop moving.
